Local Studies & History Collection

This is a special collection located in the Local History Centre within the Library. Our aim is to ensure that the history, development and culture of the Town are documented in order to become a resource for residents, researchers and scholars. This is a reference only collection, ensuring that the information is in the Library and available to researchers at all times. Information may be photocopied.

The collection includes:
• Books, reports and unpublished documents
• Local newspapers, press cuttings and journals
• Oral history interviews and transcripts
• Photographs
• Street files
• Maps
• Ephemera: leaflets, brochures, menus, programmes, calendars, etc
• Archives of organisations, original and rare items
• Free access to Ancestry Library Edition.

All of these items can be searched on the Netopac. To perform the most effective search click on "ALL FIELDS" as often a description of the item is contained in the notes.

Can you help? The success of creating this collection depends very much on contributions from past and current residents, businesses, groups and organisations. Any donations of photographs, yearbooks, programmes, diaries, letters or memorabilia would be greatly appreciated. If you do not wish to part with items we would be happy for the opportunity to copy them and return your originals.

All donations are greatly appreciated. Also, local groups, such as sporting groups, are encouraged to deposit their newsletters, records, scrapbooks, etc, with the collection.

Our Town

The Town of Vincent Local History Centre has recently published Our Town: early photographs from the Town of Vincent Local History Collection. It was launched by Emeritus Professor Geoffrey Bolton on 2 May 2007.

It is a collection of photographs from between 1902 and 1962, featuring wonderful photographs that have come out of people’s homes in our community. Although photographs are the focus of the book, each photograph is accompanied by quotes from oral history interviews, which illustrate an aspect of the history it depicts.

This is an easy to read glimpse into the early life in our suburbs, which can be browsed through just to enjoy the photographs or read at random.

The book is available in two styles: a limited edition hard cover for $35 and the soft cover is $25.  Books can be purchased from the Vincent Library & Local History Centre, Town of Vincent Administration & Civic Centre or by mail using the order form

Contact the Local History Centre on 9273 6534 for further details.
